Ubuntu for breakfast

ubuntuI managed to get another computer up and running last night. After a donation of a hard drive, a “borrowing” of a power supply and returning of an old monitor – a little assembly, a bit of duct tape (really – the power supply doesn’t fit), and a lot of watching installation bars…

I’ve got a fully functioning Ubuntu desktop! Not sure what I’m going to do with this, probably put it in my kitchen. I manually installed the java jre, so I can run a slideshow off bushelandapeck, and maybe my wife can play her runescape game. This would allow me to use our notebook to do all of my important computing (loading pictures and editing podcasts). I’m going to look and see if I can find Kodak camera support (or get a SD card reader) and iRiver t30 drivers – then I could really use this machine for everything!

Will someone just buy me a mac? I have to say, as a computer expert, windows is a lot easier to use than Ubuntu. My new Ubuntu install is nice, has some eye candy, and covers the basics. Has openoffice, firefox and all the other essentials (PDF viewer, IM, ftp, etc.) – but just doesn’t cut it on the modern accessories. I still have not been able to get the computer to either recognize or do anything useful with my digital camera (Kodak DX7440) or MP3 player (iRiver T30). All of the research I’ve done so far has resulted in just suggestions, but no solid advice. And, all the suggestions involved complex installs from the shell – needing more than basic knowledge of linux.

I’ll use this Ubuntu computer as a basic internet surfing and document writing machine, but stick to my XP machine for imaging and podcasting.

So I can’t hook up all my extras, but I was able to install eSvn to talk to my subversion server. And, installed gFTP to do my ftp-ing. Just need a good editor and I’ll be all set. After just about giving up with the slowness of this thing, I found a 256meg stick and put it in. WOW, it is flying now with 384.
